PRESS RELEASE: February 5, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LIGHT PLAYS TRICKS 6 SHORT FILM FESTIVAL CALL FOR ENTRIES International short film festival to show innovative short works AUSTIN, TX. The 6th edition of Kingston's LIGHT PLAYS TRICKS Short Film Festival has officially opened its call for entries. The festival runs from FRIDAY MAY 23 to SUNDAY MAY 25, 2003 in Downtown Kingston, Ontario, Canada, with a U.S. tour planned in FALL 2003. Light Plays Tricks is a short film, video and new media festival. We encourage both new and established filmmakers to submit their innovative, provocative, guerilla or just plain silly works. If it can be projected, we can show it. This edition of Light Plays Tricks hopes to exhibit new technologies, works that challenge audiences, and new philosophies in the art of the short form. BACKGROUND What started as a basement video screening in 2000 is now a full-fledged short film festival, with screenings, events, and parties planned. Now in its sixth edition, Light Plays Tricks can boast among its alumni: an Oscar(TM) winner, Sundance Film Festival participants, feature filmmakers, and filmmakers with big studio movie deals! But Light Plays Tricks continues to be a festival primarily FOR filmmakers. It remains a place where filmmakers can be free to express themselves, collaborate, and discuss the art form with like-minded people in a creative environment. Light Plays Tricks has given cash and equipment prizes, and both juried and audience awards, with the goal of encouraging and promoting new filmmakers. Past festivals have shown hundreds of short works from local and international artists, including, in addition to the traditional short narrative films, demonstrations of digital animation, synthetic character software, improvised comedy, music videos, a children's program, live music, and shadow puppets. Here's a cross-section of films that have screened: "More" (Mark Osborne), "George Lucas in Love" (Joe Nussbaum), "Airplane Glue" (Evan Mather, Kirk Hostetter), "Radiation Can Give You Brain Tumors" (Matthew Silver), "Mantis" (Grzegorz Jonkajtys), "Four" Joseph Baron, "Women Are Not Little Men" (Lisa Hayes), and "Slaughtered Pigtails" (Usama Alshaibi). With films shown from locations including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Cyprus, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, The United Kingdom, and The United States, Light Plays Tricks is very much an international short film festival. SUBMISSION INFORMATION Submitted works must be "projectable" and less than 20 minutes in length (the shorter the better -- and the more likely we are to accept it!), with a preview copy submitted in NTSC VHS, NTSC miniDV, DVD (region 1), or Web URL.
